            SAFER Barriers coming for NASCAR

Read Now

In preparation for Sunday at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, an extension of driver protection SAFER barriers are being added. Kyle Busch’s monolithic wreck on February 21st at the Daytona International Speedway pushed for concern. NASCAR officials called an emergency meeting to discuss any additional precautions that could be taken to help prevent injuries in the future.

They will add 130 feet of protection onto the barriers already present in lieu of this weekend’s races. The SAFER barriers will also be extended in Daytona, Talladega, and Kentucky.

                           No Blame for Phil?

Read Now

Phil Jackson appears to be exclaiming enough is enough with the New York Knicks franchise. After an accusatory interview with The New York Times during the beginning of February, Jackson decided to voice his distaste of their recent loss to the Cavaliers on social media. With the Knicks teetering on the worst franchise record in history and Carmelo Anthony out for the season, things may be as bleak as Jackson makes them seem.

The Knicks never really had a leg to stand on with the Cavaliers on Sunday. They trailed Cleveland by 19 in the first quarter. There was only 37 percent shooting accuracy from the floor during this time. They were handed a grave defeat of 101-83.

Did Jackson feel there was no effort within the game? Or could he be reeling in his own guilt over the trades he directed at the start of the season? Whatever the reason, the team’s 10-45 record will definitely not make them a playoff team as previously predicted by Jackson.

Where do you place the blame? Take our poll below!

                   New Rules for MLB

Read Now

Picture

Professional baseball fans we must pose this question to you: Is faster better? This seems to the case with the new rule implicated by the MLB for this year to expedite game play. Some of the rules will include limited managerial tasks such as managers being able to leave the dugout during replays of a call. Also, no more lingering after commercial breaks. These rules allow for you to jump right back into the action of the game. Another new rule changes the allowances of hitter stances in relation to the batter’s box when they are up.

What happens if you are in violation of these new presumed improvements? According to ESPN, if the rules are violated once, a warning will be issued. However, for continuous violators, there will be a monetary fine.

One great thing about that changes is that now managers can request a review of when a runner left a base or if they were really safe upon touching a base. They can issue a challenge rule to do so.

What do you think of these changes? Let us know in the poll below!

Hitting Hard Being Taken Too Lightly?---                           Concussions in the NFL

You’re running on the field with the football in hand heading for the promised land of a touchdown when, your body jolts forward with the intensity of a car wreck and you’re thrust to the ground. Your helmet hits the ground before you can reach the dirt. Immediately, you’re rushed to the sidelines since and are a tad dazed, but other than that seemingly fine. You can walk, speak, and see as normal. The person trainer asks you to recount what day it is; what was the last play; who won the last game; and what is our record. Finally, you’re required to recite the months of the year backwards and that’s it; you’re free to play from there. Everything is fine right? Wrong, because even though you weren’t exemplifying severe signs at that time, you do have a concussion and implications from it can follow you for a long time.

The scenario above is all too common with today’s National Football League concussion tests. ESPN spoke with Dr. Javier Cardenas about this ever-present issue within sports today. He is the medical director of the Barrow Concussion and Brain Injury Center in Arizona. Cardenas shed some light on a possible rectification of the limited concussion tests that are present today in order to protect the safety and health of players in the future.

Although this seems a ways off, doctors and researchers are optimistic that these tests will incorporate analysis of blood or saliva to determine if a player is physically able to return to a game after taking an abnormally hard hit. This will create a more scientific angle to dissect the effects a player may be having and determine if they should be removed from the game at hand. This will processed through a mouth guard that, ideally, would modify or change its colors if the saliva that is comes in contact with has signs of a concussion.

Still, Cardenas does acknowledge that there are some proactive approaches already being taken to protect players. What more do you think could be done? Let us know in the comments section below!

Is Carmelo Mellowing out of NBA play?

Read Now

We present the question: Has 30-year old, Carmelo Anthony, just given up on the NBA? Some New York fans may be nodding their heads vigorously to this sentiment. Mellow is out again for the season for an inevitable knee surgery that many are stating was put off way too long. Why postpone the surgery after sitting out several games during the season, but still participate in the 2015 All-Star Game? What was the objective there? Keep in mind that the decision was entirely Anthony’s prerogative, not ours to make for him.

Anthony faced criticisms head on stating in short, he’s done is his part and even played in games that could have jeopardized his health in order to steer his team to a victory the best he could. He also stated that being a part of the All-Star Game was for his fans. The fact that he was present at the game may not have riled fans, but the time extension of how long he was present definitely did. Anthony played 30 minutes in the All-Star Game.

With Anthony being in his 12th NBA season, we have to ask, is there still juice left in the fire? Will his legs withstand many more extensive seasons in the NBA? Can he turn the 10-30 franchise around next season? Only time will tell, but you can weigh in now with our poll below!

Can anything stop Jameis Winston?

Read Now

Picture

What hindrances could possibly falter the NFL dreams of former Florida State breakout quarterback, Jameis Winston? Could the dark shadows of his past overthrow his football abilities in potential employers’ minds? Some team managers appear to be saying no and are warding off the possibility. Winston has made headlines numerous times for his playing ability, as well as, accusations of point shaving, theft, and assault. He was cleared of the latter, but just what can we make of these allegations? Should they outweigh his ability to become the next big NFL star?

One team general manager told ESPN, “If I were betting, I would say yes, they take him.” The manager was predicting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would look to Winston during the Wednesday scouting combine. However, with the oddities that have surrounded his actions in the past, there’s plenty of doubt to be cast by NFL teams. Will Winston sink or swim in the NFL? You can weigh in below! We love to hear from you.
