We’re sad to report that baseball legend, Minnie Minoso, died early Sunday morning. Not familiar with Minoso? He was the Chicago White Sox’s first African American baseball player from Cuba. He was 90 years old at the time of his passing.

Minoso got his start with the Indians in the major leagues within the year 1949. His talent could never be denied in the outfield. Minnie was also affiliated with the St. Louis and Washington ball clubs during his career, but came to rest in Chicago where his jersey was retired in 1983.

The MLB great retired in 1964, but his love for the game wouldn’t let him be a spectator on the sidelines. He came out of retirement twice in 1976 and 1980 to contend in the competition he had a great passion for.

The retirement of Minoso’s jersey was a well-deserved honor, with Minoso accomplishing great feats and tantamount statistics to excel above his peers. He stole over 20 bases and drove more than 100 runs. Through all of his accolades, Minoso had this to say, “I’m proud of everything. I’m proud to be a baseball player.”
