For the past week, the death of Missouri teen, Michael Brown has been overcome with inconsistencies, indiscretions, divergences, disarray, and an inexplicable knowledge of the truth. What can we make of this deadly, tragedy which has resulted in violence that completely burned a community to his core?
Peaceful protests turned into civil unrest as Ferguson, MO became a battleground over the past week and a half. Reporters were thrust against walls, bullets were shot from all sides and tear gas filled the nostrils of men, women, and children as Ferguson police and protestors clashed in the streets. However, tensions are only being escalated with citizens looting and taking matters into their own hands on the streets of this city in mourning.
Where did this all begin? This visualization is shady. With the media focused on the bombs, tear gas, and rubber bullets being propelled from police and citizen barricades, somewhere along the way Michael Brown has deteriorated into the abyss of questions that cannot be answered. Missouri officials have conducted press junkets informing the public of the police officer’s name that confronted and, consequently, shot Michael Brown to death. They also released a supermarket film that showed someone that they believe to be Brown earlier in the day. However, when asked if this had any direct correlation to the shooting, police officials stated that it did not.
So, where does this leave us? Let’s step away from the protestors, the heinous scenes of injuries lined down the streets of Ferguson, and the gas mask that resemble a world war. The truth can be an ugly aspect. However, in the case of Michael Brown, there will be no room for speculation. Many want to reflect on the state of one race or the dire need for change involving the diversity of an era that is riddled with so many vast perspectives.
Perhaps, we’ve gotten enthralled in a battle that we cannot win. Which side will benefit from the death of a young teen? All of the violence, the hateful epithets, the looting, the robbery, the breaking down of a community all climaxing to the downfall of a society that is already struggling to stay afloat in a world that wants to break a part. Until all of the facts are laid out and the stones of Ferguson have been unturned, there will never be concordance.
Celebrities have descended upon Ferguson to calm crowds and reassure them that they empathize with their frustrations, but that the focus cannot be taken off the case itself. Michael Brown should be a representative of more than robbery, Molotov cocktails bombs, and expressing violent ideals. His remembrance should be one of hope and a desire for everyone involved to come out a better person. There should be a desire for the truth to become panoptical to others, so that any errors within this investigation can be precluded in the years to come. Various celebrities will be pitching in to begin a scholarship fund in Brown’s name for teens from the St. Louis area that want to better themselves and the individuals around them with and achieve a higher education.
Still, the Missouri National Guard has been called into the city due to several lurid, occurrences between protesters and police.
As the days drag on since Brown was shot at least six times on a Saturday afternoon, according to a new autopsy report, there aren’t many answers for a frustrated nation. As protesters yell the phrase, “No justice, no peace”, we have to wonder can there ever be peace without all the pieces to this fatal puzzle?
