Former NFL cheerleaders aren't cheering for job wages
When one thinks of a professional cheerleader, they think of traveling, team parties, great makeup, and a thrilling life on the road. However, this fictional misrepresentation of life in this profession couldn't be farther from the truth according to one former Jets cheerleader.
As most were focusing a great deal of attention on the NFL draft last week, the nfl was facing a different debacle. the former Jets cheerleader is suing the NFL after claiming that she was only receiving $3.77 per hour to perform all the strenuous aspects of the cheer leading profession. Another former cheerleader stated that she only made $2.85 per hour. This surely seems maniacal to most people. However, it delves into the larger issue at hand. Are cheerleaders really considered a stable facet within the NFL or are they simply freelance entertainers being contracted out?
There are various concerns being highlighted within this issue. One of the cheerleaders also stated that she was subjected to strenuous weight gain prevention and monitoring. as one would suspect, there was a great emphasis placed on the visual aspects of their bodies.
The main question bearing its' inconspicuous head is: Was it all worth it? Was the sheer thought of traveling with NFL athletes, and in some cases celebrities, worth the lack of monetary gain these women were denied? Regardless which side of the debate you are on, one thing is certain. This is an issue that the NFL will have to take a long hard look at in the near future whether they desire to or not.
