Mysterious Monster turned Hero

In the 1950's, when you thought of the infamous creature "Godzilla", you were enthralled my the sheer dominance of the large figure. During this time, the graphics didn't have to be all that great. The being and what he encompassed was simply enough to bring out goosebumps in so many. However, director Gareth Edwards' 2014 rendition left many movie goers wondering if they'd stepped into the Amazing Spiderman 2 by mistake rather than the arcane creature known as Godzilla.

The difficulty did not come within the fact that Godzilla was not physically seen until after 45 minutes into the film . This could be attributed to the mere storyline that Edwards chose to portray. He focused more on the complications of the human characters and slowly unfolding the the causes of their turmoil through Godzilla. This would be pleasing to some if one of the characters, Joe Brody, was not snatched away before we could completely grasp the essence of his being. This left the character's son, Ford Brody, to fight the good fight around the world.

The most disturbing problem with the film is the non-disconnect between the being's animalistic nature to hunt the creatures that threaten his food source and way of life, and an animal that is simply trying to save mankind. During one of the last scenes in the movie, Ford Brody stares death in the face as one of  the M.U.T.O.'s is about to devour him. Who saved him? None other than the new hero of our tale---Godzilla. But isn't that the root of the problem here? When did the 1950's star go from being a dominant force willing to destroy anyone and anything to claim his territory to a kindhearted  figure that the citizens revel within as he recedes back to the watery environment from which he rose?

Aside from the revolution of Godzilla from destroyer to hero in a surprising turn, the special effects connected to the film left nothing to be desired. For the action lover, there were numerous scenes of building collapses, gun fights, and sky diving occurrences coupled with the short parts of the confrontations you were able to view between Godzilla and the two M.U.T.O's.

In summary, this movie stayed true to some aspects of the previous films, but added it's own humanistic angle accompanied by a new perspective of the preponderant creature. The move will entertain, but the rest will be up to your own desires for the powerful Godzilla. With this movie, perception is truly a reality. We give this movie 3 out of 5 stars.
